A proposal to legalize medical cannabis through a constitutional amendment has been introduced in North Carolina by Representative Kelly Alexander. If approved into law, the measure would allow for the possession, use, cultivation and state-licensed distribution of cannabis for medical purposes.

House Bill 1161, the North Carolina Medical Cannabis Act, has been assigned to theHouse Judiciary Committee. If approved by the state’s legislature, the bill would be placed on this November’s general election ballot, giving voters the opportunity to approve or deny the change, a change which will allow patients to possess up to 24 ounces of cannabis, and cultivate plants in a garden of no more than 250 square feet. Those not wanting to cultivate their own would be authorized to purchase cannabis through dispensaries.

If you support this proposal and live in North Carolina, please click here and fill out a form setup by the Marijuana Policy Project which will send an e-mail to your district’s lawmakers, urging them to support the measure.
