The current Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske is leaving his position soon, and President Obama will need to appoint a new Drug Czar. In a perfect world, he would just leave the position vacant and end the war on drugs. But, unfortunately, I think we all know that is not going to happen. The next best thing is to appoint someone who will use logic and science to make their decisions relating to the position. Below is a petition asking the White House to appoint Dr. Sanjay Gupta to be the nation’s next Drug Czar:

“Current Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske was recently appointed to to the office of Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. His replacement has not yet been named.”

“We the undersigned ask that a qualified medical doctor be chosen as his replacement in order to facilitate the president’s public health based approach to drug control policy. We ask that the administration specifically appoint Dr. Sanjay Gupta to this office as he is one of the most qualified and renowned medical doctors in the nation.”

Gupta as Drug Czar makes no sense. He just publicly stated the DEA’s been lying to us about marijuana. So why would he want to take a job whose sole purpose is to support and spread the DEA’s lies?

    • Intergalactic Pimp

Good point, and that is exactly why he would not be appointed, IMO. Although it sure would be nice to see someone appointed who was sensible.

How about get rid of the Drug Czar position?

    • Mar’ Barn

Change its position to more suitable name to represent Dr. Gupta, not DEA!

I agree wholeheartedly with Treebrother. There shouldn’t even be a Drug Czar. The concept of a Czar is totally anathema to a republican society like ours. A Czar, really? Even the Russians had no use for the Czars by the 20th century. A Czar implies despotism.

Of course it would be great to completely get rid of the ONDCP and the DEA so there would be no need for a “drug czar”, but even if the administration suddenly shifted gears towards full-fledged legalization this would still be unlikely. These offices are also responsible for handling prescription drug laws, and those issues remain even if marijuana is fully legal.

That’s why we need a medical doctor in the position instead of a cop, which this petition specifically calls for. I don’t see why they wouldn’t pick Sanjay Gupta, because according to the administration, they haven’t even read his article about pot.

There should be no need for a drug Czar but seeing as the DEA play’s by different rules then the general public expects and demands, having Dr Gupta in this possition would be very benefitial. I dont beleive he would accept the possition but the impact alone of having this petition with a hundred thousand plus signitures would at minimum make a statement that the time has come for posative change and people have tired of the status quo!

A doctor as drug czar makes perfect sense, so that probably won’t happen. While Dr. Gupta would be an excellent choice, he would have to take an enormous cut in pay, and I’m guessing he is a little too smart to do that.
