A group called Arkansans for Compassionate Care has won approval for the title of a ballot initiative to legalize medical marijuana.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel approved the “Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act” as an appropriate title on the November 2012 ballot. If the act makes the 2012 ballot, it just needs a simple majority to become law.

The measure would allow sick and dying patients legal access to medical marijuana with a doctor’s prescription.

Arkansans for Compassionate Care is working towards the legalization of medical marijuana. They are not working towards decriminalizing the drug for everyone.

“We’re talking about a physician who would be recommending medical marijuana for someone with cancer or AIDS. So you know, this is a serious issue. A doctor’s credibility is on the line, if he gives it to somebody who doesn’t need it. So this is only for sick and dying patients,” said Arkansans for Compassionate Care Campaign Director Ryan Denham.

The petition needs 60,000 signatures by July 2012 to make the November ballot.

About Jay Smoker

I have been smoking marijuana for almost twenty years and I have no plans to stop anytime soon. My life was turned upside down in 2009 after getting arrested and tossed in jail for being in the wrong state with legal medical marijuana. I got fed up, and I now devote all my time to ending this insanity.I am responsible for the technical side of this project, but try to chip in when I can, either with syndicated articles or original content.Follow me on Facebook and Twitter.Feel free to email. any questions or concerns. I think it’s a bill that will do a lot of good, but this is Arkansas we’re talking about (my home state.) Not sure if the traditionally conservatives are ready. Guess we’ll see.

All the above comments are nothing but a joke will be one of the worst decisions ever made by the voters if they are stupid enough to believe that this movement has anything at all to do with “with helping those who are sick or in pain”. It has to do with “big bucks” and I ain’t referring to those for footed kind with antlers. IF approved, 40 to 50 percent of the population will be issued a “Medical Marijuana Card” by Doctors who will get their cut(office calls) and of course cites will rate in a few dollars in “taxes” and BOOM, there you go. I really ain’t looking forward to having to be concerned about more drivers on the road under the influence of another drug. AMERICA, the “DRUG CAPITAL” of the world. Don’t it make you proud!!!!! Oh, I’m 23 yr retired military, of which 17yrs as an investigator dealing with folks messed up by drugs.

Dear D Jones, You are Narrow Minded and Old Fashioned. This is my generation taking over and we capitalize on anything we come across. Only because we have to though, your generation has already put us through 2 depressions and countless wars. I was also in the military, but unlike your 23 I only served 5. While your generation likes to drink and drive and kill people. My generation is a bit more intelligent, just to say that we have learned from your generations mistakes, that and hang-overs suck. Now be advised that is also my parents generation as well so deduct a point for being older than 40. I have to say that I agree on one aspect of your debate, and that is the fact that the majority of card holders wont get it for cancer or any other illness, but to stay within the laws of smoking weed. Since you remember being in the military then you should at least know what you fought for, right? Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. You above all people should now the value of Liberty, I do I lost some very close friends. Did they die in vein? No, because through me and the countless others, who want to preserve our rights as Americans. We will carry on the spirits of our fallen brothers and sisters who gave the ultimate sacrifice in allowing us to be free, and to make our own desicions. They gave us the right to live, so LIVE, dont just roll over or sweep it under the rug. Its 2011 get out of your funk and smoke a blunt. Oh and I also find it funny that you came to “The Weed Blog” to tell how its a BIG MISTAKE.

D, Jones, You need to wake up and understand what peaple with sever pain really goes threw. Until you do you will never understand. Pills make me sick, pot doesn’t.

    • jim city

you must know nothing about drugs. how many people do we have in ar. who are driveing around drunk on LEGAL pills like xanax and pain pills.the docs are killing maney of my friends with legal drugs. so adicted a extended hospital stay would be required to live if they tried to quit. of the thousands of legal ways to get drunk or high i assure you marijuana would be the easyest on the population physiculy, mentaly and financely. anybody against this who drinks or takes a pill of any kind is the worst kind of hipocrit there is.

    • Meat Puppet

I’m a 26 year military veteran and am very much FOR this; you say you investigated folks messed up by drugs.  Which drugs because to compare crystal meth and marijuana is ludicrous; absolutely no comparison.  Marijuana should be legal but because it cures certain types of cancer it will not be allowed; too much money to be made off keeping people sick.  Our criminal government.

  • David

I have epilepsy and i am now disable i find that pot help me deal with it in many ways when in can fine it and to address D jones statement i do not drink and i do not do other drugs like you are trying to say that people who use pot do. it is only for my epilepsy that i use it.

  • Jake

All i have to say is that there are so many people out there who are wrong….but to legalize marijuana even if only for medical purposes is the smartest thing the country could do..to be honest weed helps me focus and learn things alot faster..i am 18 and a high school dropout..however weed has helped me focus enough to attain my ged and a 2 year collage scholarship so Mr.Jones i must say that you are a very feeble minded individual to insinuate that marijuana is harmful or addictive or whatever other negative slanderous terms you as an individual may use to discourage the inevitable legalization of marijuana..so sit back smoke a joint and enjoy the show..and enjoy life…good day to you all

  • Manda

I live in Arkansas. If by some miracle, it does get legalized here, I’m all for it! If I was a cancer patient, I wouldn’t want to try and manage my pain by perscription pills (which is by far the biggest drug problem in america!) I would rather smoke me a doob.. Eat something good, and fall asleep. Jesus, weed is not addicting, it doesn’t hurt anyone, no one is gonna make you do it, and it’ll bring some much needed revenue to this state! & as far as driving around high, most people drive BETTER! Legalize that shit!

  • ktmoffroad72901

then maybe you should tell the truth about “pot”. you have never seen anyone influenced by pot alone beat anyone, crash a car or do much of anything wrong but watch tv or drive slow from paranoia.
this is all after taking into account your age and the fact you cant possibly have enough experience in the drug field to make such a broad statement about its effect on every human being.
I am an amputee and pot helps the fantom pains and keeps me from taking a man made narcotic. I dont get in traffic accidents, beat my lady, or flip out in the parking lot. I also think you need a life, quit speaking of which you have no clue!

  • ktmoffroad72901

im sorry my above statement was for our dear mr D.Jones

How can marijuana not be legalized in the state of Arkansas how many people do you hear of that drive off the road and kill a child because they have been smoldering and driving” none” because there all to paranoid to drive or go out and why shouldn’t it be legal because hell in the state of Arkansas in alot of county’s they have drive through liquor store if that doesn’t promote drinking and driving i don’t know what does, if marijuana is such a horrible thing then is alcohol something amazing that can’t harm anyone how many family’s have you heard of lost someone because of marijuana”0″ how many have you heard of because of alcohol? Thousands throughout every day so way that out alcohol kills every day marijuana helps people with cancer through there pain and hunger every day it doesn’t kill anything exceptpain

Thousands throughout every day so way that out alcohol kills every day marijuana helps people with cancer through there pain and hunger every day it doesn’t kill anything except pain yes it’s a drug but is it lethal no is alcohol yes you don’t see people lose there jobs over pot except from a drug test because illegal people now in Arkansas get more time in prison than a child molester or a
murderer or a meth cook or all of those things put together and is ridiculous the only reason its not legal is because it has a way to be reproduced by civilians and the government cant figure out how to tax it……so think of this would you rather have a person that smokes pot around or a person who goes through a drive through liquor store gets drunk and runs over a child or actuallyanyone its way more lethal than a sick person setting at home smokeing a natrual herb.just my thoughts sorry if your offended but why not give it a chance?

  • joedirk

i hope this does pass. i live in oklahoma (on the border of ark) and id def move there. hell id even call myself an arkansan. i do have some gi issues that are relieved when smoking and its ridiculous that marijuana is illegal. sure i could take pills and a little relief meanwhile racking up side effects (i.e. suicidal tendencies, sleep driving etc.) .prescription pills kill more people than all other drugs combined and as many of you pointed out that marijuana has never killed anyone. not one “accidental overdose” , but yet all these old people think its the devil, while they’re drinking their alcohol, they talk about how people spiral down while on weed. its because they have been brainwashed by propaganda like the “reefer madness” movie. if they had ANY experience at all they would realize that their fear is in vain. their generation is thinning out and ours is coming into fruition lets make it legal and worry about the real problems of america.

where is the site ,so i can add my name on the petition?????

  • Kristen Vance

I think they should legalize marijuana (And I’m not a smoker!) and prohibit alcohol, you just don’t hear of someone driving “stoned” & wiping out a family of 5!!!

  • Dsgentry73

I work for a cancer institution, this would be great. I think the worry is that if this was approved then marijuana as a whole would eventually be legal and the government really I think wants to keep that from happening because it would be really hard to possibly tax the mess out of us like they do already with everything else because that could be grown personally. All I have to say is that I would much rather deal with someone high than drunk. And really how many accidents, fights, gun shot deaths do you hear because someone was high. High people are usually happy. And actually if it was legal as a whole not just for patients but don’t you know think that some of our crime would go down?
