marijuana and pregnancyResearch Studies Then & Now

You’ve probably heard about marijuana being used in limited quantities during pregnancy without it being harmful to the baby itself. There is a strong study out there that suggests just that. After all, it sounds reasonable. The first couple of weeks are usually accompanied with nausea and stress, and it’s only logical to soothe your condition with an organic product instead of a pharmaceutical drug. It makes even more sense after you check out all the pro-arguments that go in your favor, one of them being the study mentioned above.

Recently, researchers announced that marijuana could no longer be consumed as a harmless drug, especially during the first couple of weeks of pregnancy, when the embryo’s brain is in early stages of development. There is a strong possibility that the psychoactive chemicals present in high potent weed available today can have a negative effective on the development of the embryos brain. Keyword being may, but still, if there is even the slightest chance of the baby being affected buy it – nobody at their right mind should be smoking it during pregnancy.

Marijuana Became Too Potent

Back when cannabis was acceptable to smoke by pregnant women (somewhere around the time Dr. Melanie Dreher made her epochal marijuana research), weed wasn’t that potent. You didn’t have Super Lemon Haze available on the shelves with its 23% of THC, there was no newbie vs. experienced strains. Most strains had up to 10% of THC and that was fine. However, with bioengineering came hardcore strains and that’s what researchers claim might present a problem to pregnant women around the world.

Synthetic Cannabis

Furthermore, as a byproduct of cannabis enhancement, synthetic cannabis called Spice was born. This is a product that doesn’t contain any THC but merely mimics the effects of marijuana by inducing light-headedness and somewhat replicates the high that you get from smoking low potent marijuana. It contains no medical benefits and it can have negative effects if consumed in higher doses (those effects being nausea and vomiting). Still, as with high potent marijuana, Spice can have the same negative effects on the embryo’s brain in those early stages of development when the mother may not even be aware of her pregnancy. Do not take Spice during pregnancy!

Studies Became Outdated

The thing is, most studies that suggested cannabis is safe to consume during pregnancy came out between 1960-s and 1997. From 1997 onwards, highly potent cannabis strains emerged and the number of studies that dealt with the effects cannabis can have on pregnant women and embryos rapidly decreased. That is why its difficult to find a reliable number of studies that speak in favor of not doing weed while you’re pregnant.

Real Difficulties That Need To Be Further Researched

In addition to that, a couple of recent studies also show that children whose mothers consumed high potent cannabis during pregnancy may develop anencephaly, attention deficit disorder, neurobehavioral difficulties, depression, stress, etc. Some of it sounds a bit far fetched (such as depression and stress, which can both be symptoms that don’t necessarily need to be directly associated with cannabis use) but others present a serious health risk.

Do you think women should smoke, vaporize or consume marijuana during pregnancy?

About Jay Smoker

I have been smoking marijuana for almost twenty years and I have no plans to stop anytime soon. My life was turned upside down in 2009 after getting arrested and tossed in jail for being in the wrong state with legal medical marijuana. I got fed up, and I now devote all my time to ending this insanity.I am responsible for the technical side of this project, but try to chip in when I can, either with syndicated articles or original content.Follow me on Facebook and Twitter.Feel free to email. any questions or concerns. It states that recent studies claim potential health problems, but fails to reference said studies. It’s also likely that those studies did not remove other factors such as alcohol and other drugs being taken, prescription or not.The amount of people in the studies may not be significant, and certainly not every child had every disorder, just as normal. Finally, correlation is not causation. So many children are being diagnosed with ADHD, depression, and stress without any drugs being involved.

Absolutely correct! There has not been many studies from un-biased sources. I figured this article would help to open up the discussion, inspire some debate.

Developing human bodies are incredibly sensitive; I would not be surprised if overstimulation of the endocannabinoid system during developmental stages caused difficulties.

Just wondering if Cannabis with a higher CBD content would be any better. Seems like it would be.

no problems , Jamaican kids live in huts ,walk barefoot and smile too much.
They live on a healthy diet , Achi ,salt fish, vegetables and the freshest fruit I have ever tasted.
They are very nice to Americans for tourism. Cannabis is part of their culture.
Toms River Falls is awesome , you can swim in place .

My daughter is now going on 4 yrs old..when I found out that I was pregnant with her I was so sick for the first 6 months that I had to be hospitalized on two separate occasions for dehydration I couldn’t keep anything down at all..kind was sick all day an all night nothing helped I tried everything all the old wives tales the only thing that helped me was to smoke I was able to keep things down with the help of cannabis once the sickness ended I quit had my daughter an there is nothing medically wrong with her now nor when she was born she’s never been majorly ill or anything she’s happy healthy an she’s extremely smart..she is very advanced for her age. Overall I can honestly say my daughter an I had no adverse affects from smoking while I was pregnant. If anything it was the best thing for me especially since its an herb because I don’t even like taking otc items let alone prescription drugs.

  • Indy

i say why risk it? im alll about smoking weed but its not worth potentially damaging your childs brain.. if you cant stop smoking weed for 9 months then i dont think your fit to be a parent

    • Johnny oneye

did you even read the article? no mention of brain damage , the tests were done on woman in Jamaica who smoke/dont smoke .
Alcohol causes brain damage cannabis is a neuro-protect-ant , It protects brain cells
      Im all about that!

I encourage you to check your sources, question the perspective of statistics and question everything.

It’s been proven that marijuana helps protect brain health, also it helps stem cell growth and bone formation(:

    • Marie Magdalene

We right damaging our babies brains just by the chemicals breath in that the government is intentionally killing us with by releasing in the air. and they want you to think every little mistake you May have made during your pregnancy is the cause of your child’s birth defect or whatever. I think everyone’s born how they’re supposed to be. we all have fuckin problems with our brains. to pinpoint marijuana and blame it on that is just fuckin stupid. I trust marijuana over any mad-made product any time any day. at least I know God put that plant here for a reason. I also see it as sacred and think that a fetus that is exposed to it will turn out to have some type of close spiritual connection to God later on in life cuz of the effects it has on the brain. but guess what that doesn’t mean I’m smoking 24-7 cuz I’m a dumbass and think that’s gonna help my baby. installed MODERATION as with everything. and it’s your choice anyway. and especially Don let dimsighted people tell you you’re an unfit parent for choosing to smoke for whatever reason you do during pregnancy. most people smoke during pregnancy for a reason- mine being extremely horrible morning sickness and not being able to eat. what should I starve myself instead because marijuana might harm the fetus? Frickin idiots dude I swear. I’d like to see you come give me a lesson in parenting. I can guarantee your judgment on anyone for that reason proves that you’re not happy with the way toured parenting.

      • Marie Magdalene

The ideal pregnancy is completely drug free. However, if you are a woman who suffers from morning sickness (which can last all day) there are very few options for controlling the nausea and being able to eat the food that your body and the baby need. Stress from the mother is EXTREMELY harmful to a growing baby – that has been proven without a doubt to be true. If given a choice between feeling stressed and/or too sick to eat then I would recommend vaporized cannabis or orally ingested oil. DO NOT SMOKE ANYTHING during pregnancy. When you combust cannabis there are many more chemicals released that are not good for you or the baby. There are so many edible options now that using cannabis to control stress and morning sickness during pregnancy is almost a no brainer. I have two daughters. The first I worked hard to be super heathy and did not use cannabis during the first trimester for fear it would harm her brain. I used it after that to control my stress, depression, and pain. My first daughter ended up with Sensory Processing Disorder which is a very difficult disorder to deal with as a parent. It makes for a very very difficult and high needs baby. My second child I had even worse morning sickness than I had with my first and unlike the first it did not abate after the first trimester. I was already a medical user of cannabis and vaporized small amounts during the enitre pregnancy to control the sickness and allow me to eat. My second daughter has NONE of the problems my first daughter had and now I wonder if I had continued using cannabis during the first trimester with her if she wouldn’t have been better off and not be suffering from SPD which is a neurological disorder. It was probably triggered by the extreme stress I was under which could have been gently abated with cannabis use. The best studies about cannabis and preganancy have been conducted in Jamacia. There are fewer confounds in the studies completed there because they do not drink alcohol or use other drugs including tobacco. Every Mom must make the best choices she can for her and her baby. Cannabis can’t kill you and in my experience it is way more helpful and no at all harmful.

    • Johnny oneye

“raw” cannabis is the new craze , Dr Dave Allen suggests a bud a day.
eating raw cannabis like raw foods in general have different reactions.
If eating raw buds sounds crazy , “kief” is extracted without heat , dry ice extract I;e trichomes never heated compared to oil extract ,BHO wich is heated and has residuals of chemicals.
Thanks for coming out and telling your story , Im sure people are going to harass you “save the children” crew

      • PeaceKitten

Interestingly, I also did without pain meds or antidepressants with my first child which probably did more harm than good as well. My second child I stayed on my anti-depressants and regular pain pill management because through my own very complete study learned that stress was the absolute WORST thing for a growing child. By treating my own illnesses carefully with my secdond child instead of denying myself all helpful meds with my first, the second turned out to be the happy heathly baby I was hoping my first one would be. Would my first daughter NOT have SPD if I had taken the antidepressants and other medications that would have helped my depression and stress levels? There is no way to know for sure. Everyone has their own story but I can tell you that my children are my greatest blessing and if I had been convinced that eating dog poo would have been beneficial for my children during pregnancy I might have tried it. As it was, the studies from Jamacia gave me the confidence to continue my medical cannabis. Doctors know it doesn’t hurt the baby. But cigarettes are PROVEN to harm babies – low birth weight and often serious asthma problems. We all know about how bad alcohol is too and yet people still drink during pregnancy. Someone in the comments says, if you can’t quit smoking for nine months you shouldn’t have kids. I agree. Smoking anything is bad for your health – but smoking cigarettes is far far more destructive than cannabis ever could be. All you can do is what is healthiest for YOU and YOUR baby. Pregnancy and parenthood are wonderful, exciting, and extremely difficult. Why people must get a license to drive a car and yet any idiot can reproduce and have a baby is beyond me.

I have crohn’s disease and had horrible morning- all day sickness when i was pregnant. I smoked potent indicas under the supervision of the doctor, then switched to Zofran for nausea in the last three months. After a while it got me higher than the pot so I went back to that. It was such a shame that my crohn’s wasn’t diagnosed until AFTER my pregnancy, because we would have employed different strategies for diet and pain management. By the grace of God though, my son came out fine and at birth his apgar scores were 9, they didn’t give out 10’s at the hospital in which he was born. This has to be the most ignorant scare tactic article I’ve ever seen. Even supposing its true, why no evidence to back up his claims?

    • Sol

The ideal pregnancy leads to the healthiest baby! And a strong mother to care for it after, the body and the fact of life has unknowns no less then the unknown of hemp, mystery is mystery. Double mystery makes no sense. I would keep it to taking snappers till you feel better. The world needs to change what “drug” means to them, toothpaste and any dry good is a drug. just as I switched from fluoride to a natural fluoride free toothpaste, I would expect a responsible mom to consider what is healthy for herself and then her child. It sounds silly but if you smoke your mind to the clouds while prego why shouldn’t your fetus do the same and miscarry. There is no evidence that says there wasn’t life or a ‘thinking’ that came first with organs like the brain or ears developed second in response to already inherent abilties. This last idea is from Maria Montessori’s “the Absorbant Mind”.

    • ricki

SPD is a bugger but cannabis tinctures, and chamomile tea help to calm the little ones down. Also as you well know the occupational therapy so they can get their proprioceptive input!

  • eric

this was about the most uneducated article i have ever read. there was no proof or studies that showed that higher percentage THC would be worse. You also said that marijuana and spice will ahve the same negative effects when in the first place you said may have those effects? how can two things have the same negative effects if they arent the same chemical compounds? this was garbage and unfound claims. you should be ashamed to call yourself a writer when you dont even bother to do the actual research and try and prove your outrageous claims.

  • Jack

First off, Spice is not synthetic marijuana. It is incense. You are not even supposed to smoke it. You can’t even talk about smoking it in places that sell it. Secondly, This article is full of mays and mights. Let’s see some EVIDENCE and then make the call. Stick to the “technical side of this” there Jay Smoker.

    • Jack

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention, people have already DIED from smoking Spice. It’s like comparing apples and razorblades by comparing it to MJ.

if the tests are done by the same idiots that made all the dare sighns and comercials, then u already know u cant trust them no medicale use they say as they look at results conferming it is safe never killed anyone works for pain cancer and multiple other medical conditions.thats because ur taking profits out of there deap pockets take this pill u take it for this now u have to take multiple other pills to counteract the sideeffects

  • Anonmommy

I smoked evryday of my pregnancy, both actually, and my girls are very advanced and super calm. I do not smoke the more expensive stuff jsut the everyday “middies” and my mom smoked everyday while pregnant with me. I have since quit for financial reasons, and that I relocated across country, but I was so sick during both pregnancies that this was litterally the only way to keep myself with any nutrition in me. And to those that say if you can not stop or do not stop you are not fit to be a parent, I am a SAHM and love my children, I have them both in activities and have since they were old enough to crawl around, and my oldest is in school as well. I pay more attention to my kids than most of my riends that do/did not smoke. I strongly feel that had I not smoked my children would have both come out wit w more health issues as I could not keep myself properly hydrated or nurished during the pregnancies due to sickness and nausea. I do not condem those that do not, to each their own but such harsh things to say that they are unfit otherwise. More children have issues from a parent that smokes tobacco during pregnancy with all the extra added chemicals vs those that smoked marijuana with no added chemicals

    • FML

Your mother also “hotboxed” you in the womb. SHOCKER. speaking of nutrition and food…food for thought:just because you have a prepubescent understanding about what chemicals found in naturally occuring substances actually physioLOGICALly do to our bodies does not mean it rules it out and is the healthiest decision. Saying “oh my kids came out fine!” is a logical fallacy and it doesn’t prove that doing drugs is ok you were just lucky the affects are not obvious. They could manifest themselves into difficulty doing math problems or health conditions, the list goes on. What’s even scarier is that you had that lapse in judgement to even risk smoking to find out if they would come out ok. I’m sure this skewed thinking transcends into other areas of your life and parenting. I know you love your kids. Just THINK about it.

      • SinBear

You don’t have to smoke just to consume it. I for one, smoked while pregnant because I have severe pain. My daughter is highly intelligent and advanced. I don’t regret anything I did. I’m sure we have all thought about it, and if I wouldn’t have smoked I would have had to have an abortion. I wouldn’t have been able to deal with the pain.

        • Nancy

I was told by my doctor when pregnant that if I did not find something that would “calm me down, relax my body and increase my appetite” they would have to hospitalize me. When I asked him if he meant pot, he nodded his head yes while saying “I can not tell you to do that.” So that is what I did. I didn’t like it, it made me feel dirty and slow. However, I was finally able to keep food down and gain weight. I had a very healthy CALM baby, and she has been in gifted & talented classes since the 2nd grade. She has been at a college reading level since before the 4th grade. I personally did not have a bad experience doing this after 1997.

          • supermommy

is this true? your doctor recommended this?

          • You

yes doctors do. There is NO evidence of MJ being harmful…..but there is plenty of evidence of all the benefits from it…..not enough ppl read or research things these days i swear

          • Meena420

What about when it comes time to have your baby? And they test it and it
Comes out positive for THC? I have my med card and have HG, and dabbing is the ONLY way u can eat, work, or even sleep without throwing everything up. I just don’t want to loose the baby to
Child services because it’s the only thing keeping me out if a hospital..

      • Truthspeaker

And somehow you, without knowing her or her kids, think that even though it’s a “logical fallacy” to say her kids came out fine that YOU have the KNOWLEDGE and the POWER to say that there MUST be some kind of damage done to her children? Would she have been better off taking pharmaceutical drugs that have only been being studied for a few decades, or consuming a plant that’s been around for a million fucking years?

      • You

your name says it all FML…..why would anyone get two shiits about about what someone named FML has to say? stop being so obtuse and learn about things before you speak you moron

have you noticed the marijuana smokers here are doing no personal attacking, no criticism, no harsh words or abuse? and you people who think you are all holy have the right to judge? why don’t YOU look at YOUR scewed thinking, and pick the twig out of your own eye before pointing out the splinter in someone else’s. don’t be a jerk. ps, I am 5 months pregnant with my second and smoked daily through both pregnancies and have had beautiful healthy experiances, and I myself, am comfortable with that. you may not be, and that is YOUR choice. that does not make ME wrong.

weed has nothing to do with it, i’ve smoked 3 or 4 years and am now pregnant… go to a doctor have them check you.

    • You

agreed weed has nothing to do with not getting pregnant i have smoked weed everyday mostly all day long since i was 14 and a few months ago i started trying to get pregnant and now i am 4 weeks preggo

    • HyacenthTrauna85

you don’t FALL pregnant, you BECOME pregnant. God I wish ignorant people would stop using that phrase…maybe if it were the 1700’s…but it’s 2013!

    • San

First off don’t smoke if you’re trying; both you and your boyfriend. You should also relax your mind and not stress over getting pregnant or anything that can interfere with a calm mind. I recommend you taking folic acid 3 months prior to becoming pregnant. You should alSo refrain from smoking anything when you’re pregnant. Smoking while pregnant causes low birth weight.

I’m 53 and like in my 20s enjoy weed’ not all the time but occasionally. When I was pregnant I stopped all drugs. This mind set that you need it to calm nerves and keep calm is really sad. Suck it up ladies, it’s anxiety learn to deal with it through excersize and healthy methods, oh I am sorry is that too much WORK. Today’s society is so full of excuses it’s really sad. Live and let live though, if you want to take a chance with your unborn child than you deserve anything that befalls you but stop using lame excuses. Grow the ?@$&$ up!

    • Tiffany Sears

Many people who use marijuana to manage stress and anxiety would otherwise be on prescription drugs for that. I had to go off my anxiety medication while pregnant with my daughter and suffered panic attacks throughout the pregnancy because of it. Marijuana would have been a welcome respite but at the time I did not know enough about the drug to try it during pregnancy. The idea of “sucking it up” is extremely uneducated and dangerous as that sort of shaming can lead to severe depression, which has mental and physical effects during and after pregnancy.

    • You

Wow this is such a negative and NASTY post ffs mom of 3 read some goddamned research or at the very least grow a heart woman…jesus with that tone and language id hate to have been a child of yours…..this post makes you seem just about as close-minded and unsympathetic as a person can be. you are an ass. I if you wer in the shoes of a lot of other women you might not respond so dramtically harsh. you havnt had real anxiety if you think this way, and that my friend, is what is sad. you don’t enjoy the best things if you havnt been through the worst. no one is perfect. I myself am a smoker and limit my use, however continue to smoke during pregnancy and am having a safe, beautiful, and healthy pregnancy. I excersize, I eat healthy, I meditate, and I SELF MEDICATE, with a plant…not a drug. armotherapy if you will. you’re a bitch.

I am a mother of 2 with a thrid one on his way,i hav been an active smoker for 12 yrs. Sure when I got pregnant I decreased my intake drasticly but didn’t stop. My kids are perfectly healthy and so very smart. What does concern me is all the non natural checmically produced food they have us eatting where is the research on that. Vaccines questionable, baby powder shampoo and so on everything we consume is harmful, where are the studies for that. Live natural, plain and simple.
