detroit marijuanaMichigan’s medical marijuana industry lacks regulations. However, that hasn’t stopped a growing number of people from opening up a medical marijuana dispensary there, especially in Detroit. Washington’s medical marijuana dispensaries operate in a similar gray area, as did Oregon for a number of years. Due to the lack of regulations, medical marijuana dispensaries in Washington have come under a lot of scrutiny and attacks by officials. Compare that to Oregon, which passed medical marijuana dispensary regulations a couple of years ago, where there have been far less issues.

Due to the lack of regulations, medical marijuana dispensaries will always be a target like they are in Washington. But that doesn’t seem to deter people from opening a dispensary, especially in Detroit where the number of dispensaries has been growing steadily. Per CBS Local:

“This is the next big thing in the city of Detroit,” said Councilman James Tate. “It’s quiet for folks who are not really paying attention, but everyday it seems like another business is opening up.”

Tate told WWJ’s Charlie Langton the number of medical marijuana dispensaries within city limits is “staggering.”

“The estimate is 180 medical marijuana dispensaries within the city of Detroit,” he said. “I’ve counted 13 in District One myself. We see some locations, certainly along 8 Mile and other border streets, where you have four, five, six kind of clustered together.”

Medical marijuana dispensaries are not going away in Detroit, or the rest of Michigan. The State of Michigan needs to realize this. So rather than act like they don’t exist, or selectively enforcing laws against them, Michigan’s Legislature needs to step up and put a real plan in place. Everyday that goes by that they don’t the State of Michigan loses out on tax revenue and licensing fees. The dispensaries are going to exist regardless of what the Michigan Legislature does, so why not regulate them? Last time I checked the State of Michigan, and especially Detroit, need every dollar they can get.

Since I live in Michigan my biggest fear for these store’s is that the cops here love to use trickery and will use these poor regulations to get that promotion. It doesn’t matter to the cops that do this. I am not saying all cops are like this. I have all kinds of respect for a honest officer. I know many that feel prohibition is bs. I also no some that would love to close up shop.

Oh we here in Washington state hear all about the “problems” with dispensaries where probably a day doesn’t pass where one of our illustrious leaders in Olympia or a chief of police (the same list of sad characters still touting the tired line about the dangers of cannabis) isn’t whining to the local news tabloids about this very thing. But once one looks at the “problems” a little closer we see something quite different. I like to ask, is it a health problem? Well, as an avid local news watcher there’s NO health problems at these dispensaries. Their business is helping sick or ailing people. Is it a crime problem then?? No, not according to the local news. Dispensaries were once a prime target for robbers and burglars. But with improved security and long prison sentences that problem is (almost) non-existent. So we’ve eliminated the health and crime NON-problems some associate with the many dispensaries in the greater Seattle – Tacoma metro area. So….what other kinds of “problems” could they be thinking about? Oh…the children. Hmmmmm….parents should be able to be parents and take care of that. Just like they do with alcohol.

Anyway, I THINK the real “problem” according to the state is the fact that all these dispensaries are (are you ready for this?)

    UNREGULATED

Thanks to one of our former governors, Christine what’s-her-name, who only did half the job. Like the only “legal non-problematic dispensary” in the eyes of our state and it’s so called leaders will be one of their REGULATED dispensaries more commonly known as a recreational cannabis outlet or retail facility, they seem to be….dreaming about. It’s probably the same facility that currently runs out of product often and it’s over-priced and over-handled cannabis products are lacking if they’re even available to the real medical patient looking for medicine and relief of their symptoms. But with the medical privacy laws on the books in Washington state protecting ALL medical patients (even the ones that prefer MMJ) the state has themselves in a real pickle when it comes to MMJ. And if you look at them NOW illegally collecting taxes on a Schedule 1 substance as defined by federal law, this whole recreational cannabis scheme is about ready to fall right on it’s proverbial ass when they’e reminded of this fact coming up most likely in federal court soon. Then they have a real problem with their recreational scam…too. So even though cannabis is LEGAL in this state, the state has managed to screw this up from every angle to where nobody, not even the weatherman, knows what’s going to happen in either market. I’m sure I left something out but this line is pretty close to what’s happening here right now. And should represent & be a good case on how not to do it…
