I don’t have a medical card nor do I grow illegally so I have to go out and find marijuana on the “black market.” One question that comes up often when talking to weed smokers all over is “how much should weed cost?” It’s an interesting question that depends on a lot of different factors. Here are a few things that go into determining the price of the weed you put into your bong bowl:

  1. 1.How good is the weed? Obviously, the dankest of the dank will run you more than a bag of swag. How to tell if your weed is good is a whole separate topic, but if you have been smoking for a while, you will know what you like.
  2. What part of the world do you live in? I have lived in many different parts of the U.S. And prices very wildly. I have paid as much as $70 for an eighth of an ounce and less then half of that in other parts.
  3. How good is your “connection?” This is a big factor. If you are buying weed from a cool person who you are friends with, you are less likely to get shorted or taxed (for those of you who don’t know, this is the extra $5 to $10 someone could charge on top of the actual cost). That’s the risk you run when you buy from strangers.
  4. Is it harvest time locally? This is only important if you live in a place that marijuana grows well outdoors. When harvest time comes around, everyone is working to get rid of their crop at the same time, which brings the prices way down. Yes, the concept of supply and demand even applies to the weed market.

All these factors combine to create a fair market price for your area. In Oregon, I consider $40-$50 for an eighth of an ounce (3.5 grams) or $250 – $300 for an ounce (28 grams) to be an average price for some good weed (no seeds, no unnecessary stems, well manicured, good smell, ect). But that’s Oregon where some of the best marijuana is grown (and a lot of it too!) so maybe I’m spoiled.

I invite you to post what the average price for weed in your area is. If you have a medical exception and your state has marijuana dispensaries, your input is also welcome. I don’t want this to become a “meet-a-dealer” advertising board but I think this is constructive debate that would be helpful for folks who want to know if they are getting ripped off or not.

    I live in eugene oregon and here we pay 10-15 per gram, 25 for half an eighth, 45-50 for full eighth, 60 for a quarter, 135 for half O, and 270 for O.

    I live in both Carrabassett Valley, ME (Sugarloaf) and Portland, ME. In the Valley I get and 1/8 for $15-$30 and $180-$220 a zip. In Portland I got a friend who grows and I get a 1/4 lb. for $150. I’d say the average price in Portland is $40-$50 an 1/8 and $250-$300 a zip.

    i live in richmond virginia and it usually goes for about 20g for dank and 60$ an eigth but then bud like purple maui and gods gift goes for about 75$. and for hairy ass mids its about 85 an ounce

    Average prices in the bay area of california without a card are roughly:
    $40-45 per 8th
    $80-90 per 1/4oz
    $150 per half.
    $225-$300 whole oz.

    i personally found a hook up that does top shelf @:
    $25 per 8th
    $50 per 1/4oz
    $100 per half
    $160 per whole oz.

    needless to say im sticking with this guy till the wheels fall off.

    hey there….i just moved from KY to Dallas…..and honestly i dont know anyone here from whom i can get some…..i met this guy n he said $50 for 3.5g…….i dont know if im gettin ripped off or not…..coz back in KY i wud get an ounce for $125 n it was pretty good shit….any suggestions?

    Cost of electricity, fertilizer, rent, labor- over a years worth of harvests; indoors can be as low as 10 dollars an ounce. At least according a pretty recent RAND study- the prices really should not fluctuate that wildly depending on where you live going by the black market/ medicinal standards…

    Like all goods- its worth what someone will pay for it.

    Oregon varies allot depending on if it’s medicine for a patient or black market. I’ve heard of patients getting as much as 2lbs free from thier growers to paying anywhere from $125-$300 an oz. All of it is chronic.On the street your getting $40 8ths and up to $350 for the goods. Funny you hardly hear about BC bud anymore around here. Oregon has some of the worlds best.

    Winnipeg, Manitoba , Canada here … From winnipeg all the way out to west coast of BC you can usually get a gram of anything for $10 . Its basically standard price for western canada. an 8th will cost ya 30 or 25 if you know someone cool . a quarter should cost 60 tops and you can get it for 50-60 depending on who you know. These prices are really accurate but keep in mind that the bud gets cheaper as you get more western and closer to good ol’ BC where the supply is HIGH

    Here in Ireland its €50 ($75) for about 3.5 grams. Though dealers often give you less, I’ve seen it €50 for just over 2 grams!

    The quality varies wildly, sometimes you can get awesome stuff from the dam, other times just crap for the same price. Which is probly why so many people are growing their own stuff now!

    I live near Philladelphia, PA. I pay about $60 for an eighth of high grade and about the same for hash. An oz of each is about $325. Good shit though. All I need is a wake n bake and I’m good for most of the day.

    I am situated in inner-City Brisbane on the East Coast of Australia where I was born and raised. At over 40yo, I have smoked and sold Cannabis at every market level that exists, inc. cultivation in years long gone, despite being amongst our most conservative and anti-drug States which, I feel I must add, records our country’s worst and most insidious histories of comprehensive drug-related official and political corruption. My history with cannabis began as a child in a family acquiring pounds across inter-State borders. I will leave further background there. I have adopted a pseudonym herein. Coincidentally, I thank everyone who has shared their pricing info so far. “Think globally, act locally, be the change you want to see in the world and we will get there!”

    Hypothetically, if I were presently to either buy or sell on a daily or regular basis (I invite the reader to draw individual conclusions concerning the defintion and application of Hypothetical), allow me to share the details of what figures would be involved from my own personal experience. The rates that determine the capacity to retail the smallest possible amounts available (also known as Street-level: the highest purchase-to-profit ratio that a primarily convenience and customer service-based market will bear) is obviously exponential to the purchase price. Thus, a long-term source reports premium hydroponic Indica stock available at “wholesale entry-level” for 100/7g. I will limit my explanation to one quarter of one ounce. This is the lowest level one can “profit” from an “investment” based on community consultation and observation of the industry and localised market- which can vary slightly depending on circumstances- without exploiting or offending the prevailing expectations of (aka “rip off”) established users.

    For example, the first Australian (‘Melissa’) comment described what is generally considered locally as excessive. The figures relevant to my experience are, at present: 1.5 grams retails for $25 (often reduced by some to 1.4 grams to divide five times into 7 and therefore simplify the process- especially if division is conducted without digital scales). The next possible increment providing any greater quantative value to the buyer is at the wholesale entry level where price ranges improve. Most users prefer to avoid the retail market for obvious reasons except recreational users and for the purposes of convenience. The Cannabis “retailer” is the lowest in the chain and makes least profit (in ANY form) for the least amount of risk under Drugs Misuse Act legislation.

    So, to summarise; if I were so-inclined: On a regular, everyday basis, I could hypothetically purchase a quarter of an ounce (IF I have a contact to do so in a system legally and actively striving to prevent and sabotage any/all new networking opportunites between users such as via the internet, which is apt to note) and, based on 7 grams for a price of $100, I could then divide that into either two items of 3 grams at $50 or likewise further the division into four items of 1.5 at $25 each. This leaves one gram remaining which can considered “profit”. Those selling at 1.4 grams are then afforded the optional cash profit of 25% even at this minimal level. Alternatively, the ethical and morally focused may choose to retain profit for their “personal” use. I feel it is actually immoral to make a cash profit from the sale of Cannabis and act as such.

    For the purposes of understanding: The wholesale market, which appears to be the source providing the vast majority of supply to regular users in the region and generally extending across the country (with typical exceptions in major cities and within counter-culture activity hubs), is an entirely seperate and different system altogether. However, once noted for maintaining parity with the listed price of Gold per ounce, wholesale prices are now accepted to range, on average, between $300 to $400. The latter insists on an expectation of hydroponic, cured premium sinsemilla. Below this figure, as in any market, quality control and methods of production, presentation and so on vary accordingly and are difficult to describe with any reliability or credibilty.

    I am a passionate life-time advocate of, and for, Cannabis use and the broad implementation of legalised, regulated industrialisation of its supply. I have attempted to obviate how simply a regulated, legalised market would be potentially paralelled and the scope for Gov’t revenue which at this time remains within the black market. Cannabis users and most “sellers” are victim to circumstance and legislation which labels them criminal. Once imprisoned for my “passion”, I found genuine criminals and the average Cannabis smoker, grower and dealer were generally not even remotely similar in any way. I hope I have assisted with the fundamental purpose of education and provided some localised Aussie insight for readers.     the weed where I buy it (letterkenny, Co.donegal) goes by the predominant Irish system
    a 50 bag(€50 worth) between 2.8 to 3.5g’s around an eight
    when buying more you usually get a small discount eg. €10 off per extra eight
    A quarter will be around €90 to €100
    depending on who you know you an better deals, the prices I’ve seen for an once are
    between €300 and €330 but probably go higher
    weed varies depending on who you get it from but its usually just sold by weight rather
    then by quality (most of the stuff here is mid’s to high quality but as you’d expect being Ireland there is still plenty of shitty soapbar hash around).

    $170 – an oz of reggo
    $240 an oz high mids
    $300 an oz of medical

    In England everywhere you go with weed it’s £20 and eighth and £10 for a benz (16th). Because I know my guy, I get 3.5g eighths and 1.5g sixteenths, but most dealers are either stingy/small time and I’d say the average I see people get is about 2-2.5g eighths and 1-1.2 sixteenths, quite shit. Also the type of weed depends on the weights of the bags (most of the time) unless you have a very good dealer such as I do.

    Hash varies. For Morroccan black hash it’s about £15 and eighth, whereas your common brown block hash will cost half of that at £7.50 an eighth, but from experience I’d say the hash around here is pretty crap, but it comes in good quantaties (the dealer is a family friend and I’ve never seen anyone else pick up hash, so that’s just from my point of view).

    I live in Chattanooga TN n we have some of the best mountain homegrown shit around.no seeds nicely manicured.I pay 250-300 an oz for diesel n kush strains unless my buddies homegrown lime strain is around then it runs me around 150 an oz.thank goodness for friends with green thumbs.

    5 a gram for mids
    10 a gram for like dro, or kush.
    and 20 a gram for purp, widow, ect.
    And on occasion 25 a gram for exotics like Christmas Tree Crippie.

    25$ a quarter for mids – 100 an ounce
    Or 25/30$ for an 8th of dro – 160 an ounce
    Or 55 an 8th of high grade. – 245 an ounce

    Here in Chicago it comes from Colorado and I buy medical grade cannibis for 425 and ounce. I have MS, Neuropathy, Hypermobility Syndrome, and sever Rhumitoid Arthritis. I work in the political field and Im currently trying to get a medical cannibis bill passed here in Illinois. My guy is dependable and a great friend. Very lucky. Im smoking Train Wreck and Purple Haze. It helps me and has changed my life.

    How much should one pay for their weed? Absolutely nothing, cannabis should be readily and freely available to all. It should grow wild along every highway and byway, nurturing Mother Earth as only Lady Mary can. Damn I hate reality.

    In this part of the world you regularly see Mexican brick (schwag) going for $150/oz and up, mighty expensive for a bag of brown leaf fragments, seeds, and huge damn stems; dealers around here are absolute greedy assholes of the highest degree. When decent herb does circulate around the area, if you find anything of quality in the $300-$400/oz (I don’t fuck around with grams, eighths, or any such bullshit, if you’re going to imbibe then be serious about it) then grab it up, else expect to pay upwards of $400/oz.

    For serious tokers, it’s definitely better to drive an hour or two to find primo herb at acceptable prices. Damn how I miss the old days when a lid was a baggy so full all you could do was fold the lid over and was considered close enough to an oz (never saw one come up short, or even close for that matter) that dealers didn’t even bother to weigh things, just filled baggies with green goodness.

    i just moved to pittsburgh from delaware 3 years ago & i have hard time finding real good stuff seems like all i can find is swagg. if u want good stuff u have to go to city for it & i dont know anyone so its hard for me to find plus delaware just passed medical marijuana law now the commonwealth state of pa needs to do the same thing i have chronic back pain due to 2 back surgeries & need the really good stuff to ease my pain thinkin of goin back to delaware when they get dispensaries set up see about a medical marijuana card then i can buy it from one of the dispensaries in delaware..

    Wow after looking at the average prices I knew I was getting a good deal.I live in AL and my dealer is a close friend,I get a “discount”, and he only charges 35$ for 3.5 grams…so I’d say I’m lucky also he grows some strong shit!

    i live in southern Ontario Canada, i pay $10\gram, $25\3.5 grams, $40\7 grams, $75\14 grams, $150\OZ no matter the quality, cause the quality is excellent around here, where i live is considered the Greenbelt, we have some of the best growing soil and climates for growing…….and are at the highest point on the escarpment, lots of rain and sun…….i cant believe the prices some of you have to pay. Cannabis should be free in my opinion, it is a natural, organic product, grown the world over, we should overgrow the world with so much that they have no choice but to accept it…..lol….

    I live in Vermont. I like to smoke nightly to help keep my appitite and sleep issues resulting from ptsd under control. I usually pay 40-50 per 8th up to a half a half is usually 120. Its always good I rarely buy headdies or shwag but you can plan to pay 10-15 more or less respectivly.but not right now. I can’t find any! My guy isn’t selling any more and after being spotted by gestapo helicopters and arrested a couple years ago I won’t grow any more and don’t have any friends who smoke. Legalize it!

    I live in north GA. i may start selling. but im not sure of the prices. ima probably sell dank. i think it goes for about 20$ a gram? i havnt really talked to my dealer yet. so, im guessing a quarter(7 grams) should go for like 120$? no idea.

    I don’t understand what is wrong with you dealers charging by the gram!!!! I live in Northern Ohio and your lucky to find a dime bag where I live let alone someone selling it by the gram but that’s because all the smokers around here are like fuck that shit!! Its a rip off is what it is!!!! Granted I get the chronic for cheap from my uncle (he won’t grow or smoke the shitty weed) but it usually runs around 50 an eighth and 100 a quarter for non-family but I get it for 35$ an eight and 70 a quarter but you can usually find a bag of the brown dope around here for like 20$ so I don’t get whats with these people charging like 10$ a gram its a fucking rip and anyone buying from someone that sells by the gram should tell that person to get fucked!!
