L.A. To Make Medical Marijuana Less Accessible For Patients

This is a frustrating day for medical marijuana patients of L.A. as the city has made aquiring medical maijuana more difficult by forcing the closure of the majority of the over 500 dispensaries currently operating within city limits. Last Friday, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in a controversial move, signed a new ordinance that will shut down an estimated four hundred medical marijuana dispensaries. A letter being finalized by the L. A. City Attorney’s office and set to go out Tuesday or Wednesday will order the operators of medical marijuana dispensaries deemed to be illegal to shut down by June 7, the date that the new ordinace requires dispensary operators to conform to the new regulations.

The new ordinance allows for dispensaries that were opened before a November 2007 moratorium to apply to the city of L.A. for the right to stay open, as long as they meet new, more retrictive zoning requirements. Some of the new zoning rules include requiring dispensaries to be at least 1,000 feet away from schools, public parks, public libraries and religious institutions, as well as each other. If two dispensaries are currently within 1,000 feet of each other, the city clerk’s office will determine which one can stay in its current location, and which one must relocate. Many dispensary operators have said they plan to challenge the ordinance in court on the grounds that it will effectively zone dispensaries out of existence.

I’ve been to L.A., to the conferences and to the dispensaries, and all I can say is GOOD for the city of LA in cracking down on the operators of these venues. Look, I am all for the sale and distribution of MMJ, but you MUSt obey the rules around it.

L.A. has done serious damage to the legalization efforts by many careless operators. I am not even going to kiss up and say most operate and provide a service, with their expensive weed, they don’t. Most are in it for $$$. Most of the operators in LA do not even understand the laws, most are fly by night operators, most could give a crap about the movement or the laws. Whenever I talk to legislators or movement people outside of California they inevitably say this “We do not want to be like L.A.” L.A. is a model for how NOT to do MMJ and most people with any awaremness outside of L.A. agree.

L.A. represents nothing but that city, up in NorCal we do not have these problems at all, have more unity around the movement (it STARTED up here people), and have as a result gotten every piece of major legislation for MMJ passed. So there are models of how it can be done.

L.A. needs to grow up, follow the rules and serve patients with affordable meds, and stop the 5 grams 1/8ths already! Call it 5 grams or an 1/8…what a circus.

well here we go round 1
Los angeles is suffering the worst unemployment , while enjoying a low level of crime

    maybe the MMJ works!

So the council members came up with regulations , after years of avoiding the issue or debating since 1996

but these clowns straight up sent the cannabis community into the desolation of industrial LA
treating collectives wose than strip clubs with “residential” a key
    the poison pill be it
basically 90 % of the stores fall into the residential buffer zone.

At the cc meeting allen bell presented maps where collectives could be
there was nothing available at 1000 ft and 500 ft had very few

So they voted 1000 feet , basically making them all out of code

I hope they all fight back , the city is too broke to fight them

  • I would be willing to test my smoking ability against anyone anytime. I fact it sounds like a lot of fun. The pot smoker olympics or something sick like that…
