New York Marijuana legalizationSenator Liz Krueger has announced that she intends to file legislation in New York aimed at legalizing the recreational use, possession, private cultivation and state-licensed sales of marijuana for adults. The measure comes as New York’s Legislature continues to push forward a measure to legalize medical marijuana – a proposal that’s already been approved by the state’s House, and is expected to pass the Senate.

“It is my intention as a New York State senator to soon introduce a law that would actually decriminalize, regulate and tax marijuana in New York,” stated Krueger last week.

The measure, which will be titled theMarijuana, Regulation, and Taxation Act, would authorize adults to legally cultivate up to 6 plants and possess up to 2 ounces. The proposal would establish state-licensed retail outlets, which would be regulated through the New York State Liquor Authority.

Of the tax revenue raised, roughly 80% would go to the state’s general fund — the remainder would go toward substance abuse, criminal re-entry and job training programs.

New York residents should begin a heavy campaign of contacting their elected representatives, urging them to support legalization – you can find your district’s legislators by clicking here.

I cant smoke it but I need it to make a digestible form , I have so many things wrong with me that Dr.’s medications wont work.. It’s so wrong for the Government to make it illegal when so many could benefit from it. And the economic boost it would give this country by using it instead of trees and to make plastics and medications. The Government is up to something by not legalizing it.

With 29 electoral votes New York is the third largest in the country behind California and Texas, if NY legalizes, it will be a huge turning point in the movement. If California did it at the same time, it would be game over. IMO

Someone should heckle NY Rep Katz, the anti marijuana legislator who is against it while speeding and smoking it.

  • bart

NYer here. I’ll bother my elected officials as much as possible for this.

  • bart

NY has a lot of corruption. If our elected officials could somehow steal from this new revenue stream, then this should pass easily.

NY Rep Katz, who was caught speeding and smoking pot, will do everything he can to stop it. Meanwhile women will continue to cut off their breasts instead of smoking a little weed to prevent and cure breast cancer.

At some time the light must come on for some of these folks that a majority wants legal weed and that the electorate will not reward them otherwise. So far they just don’t seem to get it. I hope this legislation passes. Republicans should seize on this issue as one of sates’ rights. I am also very interested in arguments around the “tipping point” it seems to me that states might continue to legalize grass and the federal government would still not tip. Times are changing and it’s very exciting to watch. When I was in college (a very long time ago) two men were doing a year in the county jail over one joint. Possession of any amount of marijuana was a felony back then. I hope things get busy tipping. I have written my senators. The democratic one is in the wings making as much noise as she can about other issues so no one notices she is not advancing the will of the people. The republician is spouting tired rethoric about “gateweay drug”, “weakining the war in drugs” and the rest of his constituancy not agreeing with me. This man cannot count. Fifty-two precent of that mans constituancy doesn’t agree with him. I hope if things are going to tip that they start tipping so I will still be alive to see it.

If you want something done in congress you had best be ready to pay and by pay i mean buy. The way government nowadays works is that most elected officials will all but ignore your letters or requests unless you are willing to give in contrabutions towards them either in the form of money or in the form of favors. Favors usually being the case with people in power or larger corporations. Still what most people arent aware of is that its not actually the conservatives per say that kept Cannabis under prohibition for so long, it was actually the lobbying efforts of large tobacco companies, but now that tobacco companies are loosing their pull on this country it may soon come to pass of full legalization (albeit heavily taxed) from then on it will only be a matter of who can create the best cannabis moonshine Equivalent (cannabis that isnt under the influence of government taxes and has a heavier high effect)
