Medical Marijuana Business Licenses Announced In Illinois

Illinois medical marijuana hb 1Illinois medical marijuana patients have waited for awhile now for safe access to medicine. Applicants for medical marijuana business licenses have also been waiting. Former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn failed to issue licenses before left office, but issued ‘recommendations’ for who he thought should get licenses. It was unclear whether the incoming Governor, Bruce Rauner, would issue licenses at all. Things cleared up today when Governor Rauner did indeed announce winners of Illinois medical marijuana business licenses. Per the Chicago Sun Times:

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration Monday announced who would be allowed to grow and sell medical marijuana in Illinois.

The governor’s general counsel announced 18 licenses would be awarded to growers.

And of the 60 available selling licenses, 52 have been awarded.

You can view a complete list of the awarded licenses at the link I provided above. There are some licenses that are ‘to be awarded after further review’ so there is the chance that some applicants could still get a license. But regardless, due to how botched the process was, I have to assume that lawsuits are already being filed and that litigation will be lengthy. Hopefully that doesn’t result in patients having to wait even longer for safe access.

Talk about cronyism: so the black market producers and sellers are now legitimate? Yay for them, but shouldn’t Illinois want some competition in the market place to, I don’t know, create innovations, reduced prices, grow a higher quality product, ensure that not all growth and sales establishments are fronts for laundering money for cartels/organized crime, offer choice to the patients, etc?
I guess they are not fans of capital investment or of fostering the entrepreneurial spirit.
Still, licensed purveyors are better than the status quo tax evaders.

I just moved to the chicago area from california where, since 1997 I owned operated 2 very successful dispensaries, I also grew medicine for my patients, I sold both dispensaries in 2010 to venture into other avenues of medical marijuana. California is a wild west showdown, here in illinois I havent a clue about licenses reviewed by the governor? could someone give it to me straight? what do I need to do to even apply for a said license?

  • I was gob smacked when I found this out last night. It has been all over the TV news. And of course the ‘net.

This program have been approved by a legislative committee, bringing legal marijuana one step closer to reality for qualifying patient

The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules approved the regulations at a meeting Tuesday in Chicago. Lawmakers claimed they will track every marijuana bud and leaf produced.

The group discussed rules for both patients who are looking to get relief for a medical condition and growers. It is not clear how many people who have medical conditions are interested in getting registry cards, but the Marijuana Policy Project estimates more than 10,000 patients could eventually sign up in Illinois. Applications could begin as early as September and medical marijuana would be available in 2015.

State representative Lou Lang told FOX 32’s Joanie Lum he has been working toward this for years.

“It took me five years to pass this bill and I didn’t do it to create business or revenue. I did it to provide a better quality of life for every sick person in our state,” Lang said.

This is not true I’m writing letter to every body asking why state Representatives don’t tell the truth cuz Lou lang said every sick person gets help what about those with a record so Lou Lang statement is not true people in the state of Illinois  are denied medical treatment with the new marijuana pilot laws just because their have a record and are treated differently this means everyone is not treated equal with medical treatment in eyes of state of Illinois

I don’t think many lawmakers in Illinois read the Weed Blog and judging from this type of commentary that might be a good thing if we want cannabis to legalized for all adults in the next 10 years. Why would any lawmaker read this type of comment and suddenly realize “Oh, i am part of the problem and should resign immediately.”?? Walk some precincts for a State Rep. sometime and then they will listen to whatever crazy you want to offer, don’t expect them to follow through and do anything but at least then they may hear you out.

Why because we have a voice and in the us constitution it says we have the right to take action if we realize that lawmakers are not doing a good job we have the right ask for change and duty to make change and if we stand together those who choose not to andgive excuses why we can’t should just step aside we are americans and we as citizens never do anything we always turn are heads and let someone else do it so if you don’t have the balls to stand up for are rights as humans than your comments don’t mean a thing for someone who lives in fear and that can’t fight a fight So go by some dresses and skirts or grow a pair and let the real men handle this

        • Abraham Froman

If lawmakers aren’t doing a good job then work in the next election against them. You are registered to vote?? You understand we live in a democratic republic?

=====let the real men handle this=====

Do you think women aren’t politically active or capable of making this happen? Do you understand the role of women in bringing about and ending alcohol prohibition? How about how national polling numbers jumped up ten points in the last five years largely due to women ages 25-40 supporting legalization?

citizens your crude political blog commentary is part of the problem, you probably hate the politicians and the process so all you do is bark all day on the blogs behind the safety of your computer. As someone who shows up and works with the process i can assure you that these actions, at least in Illinois are not helping the cause.

Look you said it we are all equal men women race etc.and those who need health care should not be denied that or discriminated against health care I have no problem with politicians or the process just that this laws made do discriminated against those who need medical care bottom line and its not right we are all equal and deserve So your saying a person with cancer and cant find relief through medical marijuana and if ths person has a record he or she can’t get medical help that is wrong in every way if you are human and no i dont hide behind my computer I have freedom of speech if you work in illinois process of this issues than speak for us we are all equal every one free in state of illinois has the right to medical treatment
