Missouri Senator Blunt Votes In Favor Of Medical Marijuana Rights

Great job, Show-Me Cannabis family! This day is historic for our movement in Missouri.

Last night I sent you an email asking you to call Senator Roy Blunt and encourage him to vote yes on the Mikulski amendment — which mirrors the Rohrabacher-Farr amendment by protecting the rights of medical cannabis states — during this morning’s meeting of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill will still need to pass the full Senate, but with a vote of 21-9 in favor from the committee, things are looking positive.

Particularly over the past year, efforts to reach legislators at a national level have ramped up as organizations such as Americans for Safe Access, Drug Policy Alliance, Marijuana Policy Project, National Cannabis Industry Association, National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, and Women Grow have collaborated to push for federal recognition of states’ rights to medical cannabis by holding national lobby days, along with letter-writing and call-in campaigns. Sometimes it seems as though we work and work but never get anywhere. But this slow chipping away at long-held prohibitionist beliefs is starting to carry marijuana legislation down the road. Yesterday, almost all Democratic Senators on the committee and several Republicans voted in favor of the Mikulski amendment — including our own Senator Roy Blunt!

Please take a moment to call 202-224-5721 or email Senator Blunt to let him know how much you appreciate his leadership on this issue. There is no doubt that many more prominent Republicans will now follow suit in recognition of their trust for him.

Congratulations to all Missouri marijuana activists everywhere! This would not have been possible without your help! However, this is still only a first step. This bill will only last until next year, so we must continue to press our legislators to pass the CARERS Act, which would end the federal prohibition on medical marijuana. Please help us continue this good work with a donation of $25, $50, $100 or $250 to Show-Me Cannabis today!

The fight is just getting started. We are standing up for our rights, and we will not sit back down!

Thank you for standing for justice.

You have my best wishes in Missouri, Amber Iris, from the equally frustrating work environment that is New York state. It’s only because so many ladies and gents worked diligently together, all as determined as you to change cannabis policy, that the seeds of our state’s new medical program will literally be in soil by next month. If I’m not mistaken, passage of the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States Act will not “end the federal prohibition on medical” cannabis, since it would only move the farcical word “marihuana” from Schedule I to Schedule II in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA)–the same location as cocaine. Sadly, the widely cherished flowers of cannabis plants will still be considered a “controlled substance” subject to federal, state and local repression for many years to come. The ONLY way to defeat the Anti-Marihuana Tyranny and truly end this damned prohibition is to entirely remove the word “marihuana” from the CSA.
