With the voting booths are closing in the Western U.S., results from Nevada are in. With only 51.4% precincts reporting, the Nevada Marijuana Legalization Initiative, or Question 2, passes recreational marijuana in to law.

The Nevada Marijuana Legalization Initiative passes with 53.8% supporting.

For residents 21 years and older, Question 2 legalizes:

  • possession of 1 ounce of marijuana,
  • a taxed and regulated recreational cannabis industry, with tax revenue supporting K-12 education,
  • allows anyone who does not live within 25 miles of a marijuana store to grow up to 6 marijuana plants.

The initiative outlines that funds from industry taxes be allocated to schools and the regulatory structure. The Nevada Department of Taxation will oversee the licensing of marijuana retails stores, and marijuana cultivation, manufacturing and testing.

The state passed medical marijuana in 2000.
