Marijuana measure will be on Oregon’s November ballot; events planned in Portland and Salem
I have been participating in marijuana reform efforts since the late 90’s when I was in high school doing everything I could to help legalize medical marijuana in Oregon. Back then I was kind of an outcast in school as a result of my political beliefs. If you would have told me then that in 2014 Oregon would likely have legal marijuana, I don’t know that I would have believed you. I’m so happy to know that the New Approach Oregon campaign is leading the way. See their press release below:
WHAT’S NEWS: The New Approach Oregon campaign to regulate marijuana is turning in the 145,00 signatures it has collected to the Secretary of State.
WHY IT MATTERS: Oregon voters in November will decide whether to regulate, tax and legalize marijuana. The campaign has collected many more signatures than needed to qualify the Control, Regulation, and Taxation of Marijuana and Industrial Hemp Act for the ballot.
WHY TODAY: Because it’s the six-month anniversary of marijuana regulation law taking effect in Colorado.
PORTLAND
WHEN: 11 a.m., Thursday, June 26
WHERE: Right in front of one the place that too many people have had to go because we treat marijuana use as a crime — the Multnomah County Courthouse, 1021 SW 4th Ave., 97204.
VISUALS: A giant pile of boxes, decorated with factoids about the consequences of marijuana prohibition, containing the petitions that more than 145,000 Oregonians have signed to qualify the measure for the ballot.
WHAT: A 10-minute press conference, followed by media availability, featuring New Approach chief petitioner Anthony Johnson, along with two other advocates for a sensible approach to marijuana.
SALEM
WHEN: 2 p.m.
WHERE: Just outside the capitol building.
VISUALS: A train of people lugging the boxes of signatures from the van, past the capitol steps and to the Secretary of State’s Office. After we turn the boxes in, we will have a short press conference featuring chief petitioner Anthony Johnson.
