wichita kansas marijuanaNext month (April 7th) voters in Wichita, Kansas will vote on whether or not to decriminalize marijuana. A successful vote would send a message to the rest of the State of Kansas, as well as the rest of the country, that it’s beyond time to reform outdated marijuana laws. If Wichita, Kansas can notch a marijuana reform victory, than just about any other part of America could do the same. The most recent poll shows the marijuana decriminalization initiative winning. Per KSN:

The latest KSN News Poll conducted exclusively for KSN-TV by SurveyUSA was released Tuesday on an initiative to decriminalize marijuana.

Based on the poll, 45 percent say they support decriminalizing marijuana. Meanwhile, 39 percent are against. Sixteen percent of voters are still uncertain on the issue.

It was disheartening to read comments in the article linked to above that the Wichita City Council has pretty much already conceded that they will not fight the State of Kansas over the initiative if there is resistance. I can’t help but wonder if the City Council would be so quick to roll over if it were any other issue? I’m hopeful that the initiative wins by such a large margin that it brings national attention, and puts pressure on the State of Kansas to back off and respect the will of the voters.
