Health Canada oversees the country’s medical marijuana program. Health Canada is planning an upcoming anti-marijuana campaign targeting Canada’s youth. Health Canada asked leading doctor organizations if they would join the campaign, inviting Canadian doctors to ‘co-brand and provide expert advice’ to the program. Canadian doctors decided to not participate in the reefer madness, politically fueled campaign. Per CBC:
“The educational campaign has now become a political football on Canada’s marijuana policy,” said a joint statement released Saturday by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
“We did not, and do not, support or endorse any political messaging or political advertising on this issue.”
Marijuana policy has become a high profile political issue in Canada recently. The Conservative Party recently released an ad attacking Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau. A flyer distributed by the Conservative Party stated that Mr. Trudeau’s ‘first order of business is to make marijuana more accessible to minors’ and that Liberals ‘want to make buying marijuana a normal, everyday activity for young Canadians.’ It’s that type of propaganda that Canadian doctors passed on, and rightfully so.
