Richard LeeLegendary Cannabis Activist Richard Lee Detained

By Zusha Elinson

Federal agents on Monday morning raided several properties owned by Richard Lee, the leader of the marijuana legalization movement in California, sources tell the Bay Citizen. Agents also detained Lee at his home.

Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents executed search warrants at Oaksterdam University, which describes itself as “America’s first cannabis college.”

Agents also raided his home and the site of his former medical marijuana dispensary, Coffee Shop Blue Sky, which had operating as an underground pot club.

Sources tell The Bay Citizen that the agents also detained four marijuana nursery workers.

Spokespeople for the IRS and the DEA would not provide any details on on Monday’s raids, explaining that the search warrants are under seal.

Arlette Lee, a spokeswoman for the IRS, said that the U.S. Marshals Service is also involved in the operation.

This just makes me sick to my stomach.  If all of government people involved with this, all of the sudden just died, I would sing and dance on their graves.

This really screws with my karma.  Maybe I need to consult Buddha .

The IRS and US Marshals just raided Oaksterdam University, and arrested Richard Lee, the preeminent living cannabis activist in California.  Also beat up and arrested was a journalist from KPFA.  Facebook conveniently determined that this stream was spammy or unsafe, and blocked the URL.

  4. “The president as a candidate promised to maintain a hands-off approach
toward pot clinics that adhere to state law. At a 2007 town hall meeting
in Manchester, N.H., Obama said raiding patients who use marijuana for
medicinal purposes “makes no sense.” At another town hall in Nashua,
N.H., he said the Justice Department’s prosecution of medical marijuana
users was “not a good use of our resources.” Yet the number of Justice
Department raids on marijuana dispensaries has continued to rise.”

  5. Just free the damn plant allready. Its not fare to lock some up for usen some thing that is less harmfull to us than booze or cigs. Well is it????

  6.  AHHHHHHHHHH! Makes me want to scream! California should have passed Prop 19. Oh well, I can’t do much except be aroused to anger and keep doing what I can when I can to help effect change. Someday we’re going to be singing songs of freedom instead of just redemption songs…

  7. 5,000 years of human use and not a single death. Who are “they” to make cannabis illegal?? Forty years of prohibition has proved that while it’s easy to end legal supply, it’s impossible to end demand ..and where there’s demand there’ll always be supply – whether it’s legal or not.

Their actions today encourages crime and makes children LESS safe!

  8. Common Sense on

The Mexican drug cartels are dancing in the streets!   Whoo hoo!  All they need to do is kill off all their rivals in Mexico and anybody hiking in a national forest who stumbles on their crop.  Thank goodness we can start killing each other again….I was starting to jones.

  9. Thank you for the information. I am active in our local legalization movement and I was audited by the IRS a few years ago. The IRS agent kept leaving the room to talk to someone in the next room. I suspected it was DEA and wondered if it was legal for the two agencies to collaborate. Another overreach of our Federal government.

  10. Since you probably didn’t READ THE BILL, as 99% of people who picked a side did not, you might have been happier if it passed and you’d seen a few thousand 18-21 year olds with permanent criminals records and multi-year prison terms for passing a joint.

If you’re going to comment AT ALL about what statutes are adopted, you should have at least READ THE BILL.

  11. The feds were only concerned with “protecting us from ourselves”, you understand…protecting us from murderers…well…that’s not something they’re interested in these days.  The fact that not a single one of the feds dropped whatever PLANT they were carrying and dashed over to the MURDER IN PROGRESS only a few blocks away tells you this in no uncertain terms.

  12. Sounds like the DEA is desprate for job security…….

“Arlette Lee, a spokeswoman for the IRS, said that the U.S. Marshals Service is also involved in the operation.”

That’s BS, they can reveal that information any time they feel like it.
