boston freedom rally masscann norml marijuanaJust eight days before the long-planned first-ever two-day MassCann/NORML Boston Freedom Rally on the Boston Common, the City of Boston denied the event’s permit. However, as predicted by the hard working people at MassCann NORML, the permit was issued allowing the event to take place. As described on the event’s Facebook page:

“After a hearing Friday afternoon pursuant to the injunction filed by MassCann, MassCann was granted a 2-day permit, but with a foreshortened schedule: Saturday noon to 6 p.m. instead of noon to 8 p.m., Sunday noon to 3 p.m. instead of noon to 6 p.m.”

The ruling was a victory for the First Amendment, as well as for the marijuana movement. It also wasn’t the first time that the City of Boston has tried to pull something like this, and been denied in the name of freedom. Per the MassCann NORML site:

“This is not the first time the City has attempted to derail a Freedom Rally. In 1997 and 1998 the City imposed unworkable and unconstitutional restrictions which were overturned by court injunction. In 2008, the City attempted to siphon off any proceeds from the rally and redirect them to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, a scheme that was also overturned by court injunction.”

I know a bunch of people that are attending the MassCann/NORML Boston Freedom Rally on the Boston Common today and tomorrow. If you would like to know more about the event, click here.
