Marijuana And Breastfeeding

I received a question recently via e-mail from a reader. It was from a new mother that wanted to know if consuming marijuana while she was breastfeeding would hurt her newborn. She didn’t consume marijuana at all during her pregnancy, but was a moderate to heavy user prior to getting pregnant. I know she is not the only mother out there wondering about marijuana use and breastfeeding.

Obviously, I’m not a doctor, so take this article for what you will. However, I did find a study on the topic from people that are doctors. The study was titled, ‘Marijuana: Prenatal and Postnatal Exposure in the Human.’ It was conducted by Katherine Tennes, M.A., Nanci Avitable, M.A., Carol Blackard, M.D., Cecilia Boyles, M.A., Bernice Hassoun, B.S., Larry Holmes, M.S., and Marie Kreye, Ph.D.. The study found the following:

No significant difference was found between users and nonusers in the age infants were weaned, suggesting that marijuana did not interfere with lactation. Comparison of infant outcomes on growth, or on mental and motor development, revealed no apparent effects of postnatal marijuana exposure.

Again, I’m not a doctor, so take the information for what you will. The people that conducted the study have more letters after their names than I could ever have, so I think they are credible. To read the full study, click here.

    Regarding Breastfeeding:
THC transfers to the infant’s bloodstream via mother’s milk and has a very long half-life meaning it has the potential to accumulate over time with chronic use by the mother. These higher accumulations are probably the most dangerous thing for the baby’s brain development. As a breastfeeding researcher and public health person, I wouldn’t recommend smoking during lactation. If someone must use then consider the half life and do not use habitually but rather occasionally.

Regarding pregnancy – the blood/brain barrier is most open during this time – meaning whatever mom ingests baby ingests. Adverse effects on baby’s brain development are much more likely with drug use during pregnancy. It’s not worth the risk. Wait a few years, please, for the sake of your baby.

  5. I smoked wile I was pregnant and wile nursing… My daughter excelled in school and now has a masters degree.. I also smoked going to collage, I was the top of my class graduating both magna and suma cum lauda… didn’t hurt us..

  6. There was a study conducted in Jamaica that showed no bad effects, but also showed that the children who were exposed to cannabinoids early on were better adjusted and had a higher intelligence level than those that weren’t exposed to cannabinoids.

  7. marijuana has been used during pregnancy and child birth for centuries. It stops morning sickness and allows for a very smooth delivery.

  8. Some terpenes probably are lost due to the cooking temperatures, however this is most likely why when you experience a high from edibles, it is more of a body high than a head high. The CBD/CBN terpenes vaporize at much higher temperatures than THC requires, so you lose a lot of that heady high, but keep the body high. Not all terpenes vaporize at the same temperatures, which is why vaporizers have adjustable heating elements, that allow you to vape at whatever temperatures you like. Personally I just smoke my weed and do my best not to torch it and smoke slowly, but if you have the time you can experiment with all kinds of different vaping temperatures, cooking temperatures, etc.

I am a breastfeeding mother of two 16 month old twin boys. I have to smoke otherwise I would have no appetite which would decrease my supply if I didn’t eat and also without vaping I would be a depressed raging mad woman. Marijuana helps with my mental health and I would always suggest vapeing instead of smoking.

  10. I breastfed both my boyz.. no problems they r amazing men 2day… and it was back when it was frowned on

  11. not relevant to this article but I have a question. you give recipes for cooking with weed but wont the oven at 350 vaporize the thc?
