Missouri State Representative Plans Marijuana Legalization Bill

On Monday, the Riverfront Times reported that Missouri State Representative Rory Ellinger (D – University City) intends to sponsor or co-sponsor a cannabis legalization bill in the 2014 legislative session. Ellinger was one of the primary sponsors, along with Representative Chris Kelly (D – Columbia), of both a cannabis decriminalization bill and a record expungement bill in the 2013 legislative session.

I believe the support those bills received from this organization and advocates such as yourself has convinced Ellinger, Kelly, and a number of their colleagues that the time is ripe for a discussion on legalizing and regulating cannabis like alcohol.

Ellinger also plans to reintroduce the decriminalization bill, which, as Ellinger notes, has a much better chance of passing than the legalization bill. In fact, I think we will have to pass legalization in Missouri through the ballot initiative process. However, we will still do everything in our power to support any legalization bill in the legislature, even if it is unlikely to pass through the legislature any time soon.

Political change is a long term endeavor, and what is debated in the legislature often defines the boundaries of what is seen as politically possible. Just getting a bill introduced and discussed in Jefferson City can make an idea that was thought of as outlandish or Utopian just a few years ago into a thoroughly mainstream topic.

For this issue in particular, it helps remove the taboo that surrounds open discussion of cannabis policy and allows people to consider the facts without fear of political or social persecution. Once that happens to a sufficient degree, we will win, because it is only ignorance and fear that allow cannabis prohibition to continue.

The legislative session does not begin until January, but it’s not too early to start talking to your state legislators about legalization. One way you can do that is by responding to the surveys that most legislators mail to every registered voter in their district. Be sure to mention that you want to see cannabis legalized in Missouri, and that the issue is extremely important to you!

Your financial investment in Show-Me Cannabis also allows us to continuously push reform forward, even while the legislature is out of session by organizing town hall meetings across the state, running ads that put our message in front of new audiences, and garnering tremendous amounts of media coverage every weekPlease make a difference by contributing now!

  1. Marijuana is inhaled as extremely hot fumes to the peak inspiration and held for as long as possible before slow exhalation. This predisposes to greater damage to the lungs and makes marijuana smokers are more prone to bullous disease as compared to cigarette smokers.”
Patients who smoke marijuana inhale more and hold their breath four times longer than cigarette smokers. It is the breathing manoeuvres of marijuana smokers that serve to increase the concentration and pulmonary deposition of inhaled particulate matter – resulting in greater and more rapid lung destruction.

  2. A new study finds that the development of bullous lung disease occurs in marijuana smokers approximately 20 years earlier than tobacco smokers.
A condition often caused by exposure to toxic chemicals or long-term exposure to tobacco smoke, bullous lung disease (also known as bullae) is a condition where air trapped in the lungs causes obstruction to breathing and eventual destruction of the lungs.
At present, about 10% of young adults and 1% of the adult population smoke marijuana regularly. Researchers find that the mean age of marijuana-smoking patients with lung problems was 41, as opposed to the average age of 65 years for tobacco-smoking patients.

  3. Ryan your the dumb a$$ I ran my comment through spell check ! And what does the affairs with women got to do with it , I sure women don’t approve of what your talking about , why do you hate women and disrespect them like their some kind of reward for higher learning or the amount of money someone makes , you are a real loser ! I bet you one of burnt out pot smokers I am talking about . The lesson here is if you don’t want to grow up and be like Ryan don’t do DRUGS ! his outlook on reality is blurred from to much POT !

  4. I have thought it over what you said and I want you to know I still own a few BILLBOARDS in Columbia area and because of you being a dick , I am going to donate Free signage to anti- legalization because your a dick , so thanks to you the movement gets pushed back a little !
    uck you

  5. Lets see your right my writing is not one of my strong points , so that all you got to defend pot smoking ! I am 51 years old and am set to retired , I chose to talk about 2 of my old friends that are lazy ass pot smokers , I could have talk about what smoking has done to my mother that I am taking care of now , Because she smoked , Now hook up to a air supply 24 hours a day , can’t find her way around the house because she gets lost . The doctor says its do to lack of air passing from her lungs to her brain from SMOKING and I am sure your lungs does not know the diffrents from cigarette or Pot smoke so you remember what I have said here while you yourself are carry your air tanks around for the rest of your life ! While I am sitting on a beach somewhere ! And now I am going to donate free signage to the anti- legalization movement because of you , so you yourself have made the movement lose ground

  6. Wow, who do you owe your terrible spelling and grammar to? You diss people for the way they choose to live their lives? You pick two people you know who were probably losers to begin with. College is nothing special. Any idiot can take out a loan and pass some classes. Not much different than high school. I like how you insult marijuana smokers for being nonintellectual, while your entire little paragraph is written up inaccurately. Try rereading your paragraphs, some sentences barely even qualify as proper thoughts. I’m not sure what moron would possibly consult an illiterate, unschooled moron advertise whatever it is they’re selling, but it’s great you’ve made something of yourself. Do you have something against people who paint houses? Do you really think somebody who paints houses doesn’t work just as hard as you do? Trust me, there are plenty people richer and much more successful than you and some even do drugs like cocaine… That’s right, lawyers, doctors, teachers, many have all been caught doing all kinds of drugs…. Yet they went through much more schooling than probably all of your little “circle” combined, and they make more money, probably are having several affairs with multiple woman, while you the poor schlub is making lemonade signs for little girls stands with crayons. Please, nobody cares about your experiences, as they’re obviously made up.

  7. I had two close friends that I grew up with since we where in grade school , they was the only two in our group that smoked pot since they were 14 – 15 years old , all of our group went to collage , except me I went to work and now own my own advertising business , Les went to art school at Stephens got a 4 year degree in only 7 years , Jerry on the other hand got his phd. At M.U. In agriculture in 10 years . The last time I seen Les he still lives in his moms house ( she moved out ) he does painting not on canvas but on walls ( as in a house painter ) , Sitting in his living room we could see some deer in the back yard his comment was ( fear the deer they are always watching you ! And he meant it , Wow he is out there ! And back to Jerry he raises cattle on his dads farm , We all know farming hours are not Jerry he starts at noon until 3:00 or 4:00 pm wow , I am almost ready retired and the two of them struggle every day to make it, I owe their laziest to pot
