oregon law review symposium drug policyOregon Law Review is pleased to announce its Volume 91 Symposium, A Step Forward: Creating a Just Drug Policy for the United States, hosted forty years after Oregon became the first state to decriminalize marijuana.

U.S. drug policy is an issue of major concern. The 2012 marijuana legalization initiatives in Colorado and Washington illustrate a growing popular skepticism of a drug criminalization regime that costs the United States billions of dollars and results in thousands of new incarcerations every year. While opinions about an ideal policy vary, the importance of a thoughtful evaluation of our nation’s punitive approach is clear. Panel discussion topics will include the unresolved issues of federalism presented by state initiatives, the costs and benefits of our nation’s drug laws, and the successful elements of alternative regimes in other nations.

6.5 hours of CLE credits approval pending. For more information about the Symposium, or for information about sponsorship, please contact Adam Schulz, Symposium Editor, at aschulz4@uoregon.edu.
