Reasons To Legalize Marijuana – The Rubin Report

The Rubin Report, a comedy and politics panel show on The Young Turks Network, recently tackled the issue of marijuana prohibition. According to Jeffrey Miron, a senior lecturer at Harvard University, Marijuana prohibition now costs state and federal government as much as $20 billion a year.

Facts stated in the video:
— $8.7 billion would be saved on law enforcement, if legalized.
— $8.7 billion would be generated from taxes on marijuana, if legalized.
— Accounting for inflation, that would add up to about $20 billion in savings.
— The American Civil Liberties Union estimated that local governments spent $211 million on enforcing marijuana laws between 2000-2010.
— Around 750,000 people were arrested for marijuana related crimes in 2011. That’s one arrest ever 42 seconds.
