Versus War On Drugs Debate Full Video

The Versus ‘War on Drugs Debate’ snuck up on most Americans. In fact, I can’t find many Americans that watched the Versus debate or even heard of it for that matter! For those of you that missed the war on drugs debate, the entire debate (first of many they say) is posted below. There were some things that stood out to me about this debate. First of all, the format was insane. There were way too many people involved, and as a result, no one got to thoroughly explain their stance. Instead, the multiple moderators just seemed to jump from person to person while each speaker said something pretty generic, and was cut off just as they were ramping up.

The other thing that stood out to me was how well Russell Brand did. When I heard the lineup of speakers and I heard Russell Brand’s name, I didn’t understand why they invited him. He’s one of my favorite comedians, but I had reservations about how he would do in a serious debate. Russell Brand blew my mind! He shined in this debate more than others, and seemed to have better ideas than most, if not all, of the other speakers. This despite the weak debate format.

  • FACT: Cannabis is illegal under U.S. Federal Law. Everything else is just an exercise. Lying to a doctor to receive a medical card is illegal, unethical and immoral. I shouldn’t have to lie to someone to be able to put something into my body.
Now let’s look at what happened to Prop 19 in California. It was shot down because of the “I gots mine” and the MMJ community being greedy. You don’t think so? Where are all of the “wonderful” legalization propositions promised to be on the ballot in 2012?
Potheads are their own worst enemies. They inability to even get out and vote to change the laws shows you how ineffectual they are.

FACT:”The only dead bodies from marijuana are in the prisons and at the hands of the police.” ~ Jack Herer

    • You are a fucking retard the USA is more than 47 trillion dollars in debt dumbass we have spent 10 trillion on the war on drugs and we continue to spend billions upon billions a year to fight drugs Oh yeah and 80 percent of that money we spend and have spent goes to fight marijuana which has never killed anyone. people like you who are ignorant enough to support the war on drugs are the reason america is bankrupt and since causing america to go bankrup just because you too stupid or is essentially by supporting this harmful war on drugs you are betraying america. (By the way all the founding fathers grew smoking marijuana and hemp)

      • Well, at least you couldn’t argue any valid points against my statements. Just ad hominem attacks and points that don’t refute my statements or have any correlation to my statements. Thank you for proving my point.
BTW, Dipshit. I’m for Ending Prohibition. I donate time and money to ending this stupidity. What’s your excuse, you armchair activist?
        Fucking human paraquat

I don’t think your points are wrong. It’s SAD that people are reduced to lying to their doctors to get something where they SHOULD be allowed to DECIDE for themselves whether it’s right for them.

It’s SAD that anti-drug (i.e. pro-war-on-drugs) lobbyists managed to CONFUSE and SCARE voters enough to make Prop 19 fail, just like they TRIED to do at the Versus debate. Confusion, fear and lies are core to keeping the drug war alive.

The entire “No” side didn’t even ANSWER questions, they made PERSONAL attacks and IRRESPONSIBLE associations, not to mention OUTRIGHT LIES. It’s galling.

When Spitzer talked, volume and sound quality went up.  I think it made him look like a typical American bully.
I think at the center of this debate is the moral question, as both sides addressed, and in my assessment, the Spitzer side lost high ground, as the polls reflected.  I’m wondering how one can claim the moral high ground when they lie about the relative harms of the different classes of drugs, and they don’t apply the levers of force according to the scientifically proven relative harms?

In my mind the answer is simple.  If powerful people can get you to believe cognitively dissonance facts, then they can gain the slippery slope of controlling your thoughts and ultimately your life.  The very ideas of our founding fathers was to place prohibitions on the powerful and their interference in our everyday lives. I think at a minimum, our founding fathers (who grew hemp) would want the “war on drugs” to be honest.

I totally agree. Not only was Spitzer loud, he was disrespectful, even to his own side. They say he’s a great journalist but I have no personal respect for him after watching the way he “debates”.

THE WAR ON SPUDS  (partial transcript)

    Julian Assange: …Marijuana…is
a drug that is about as addictive as potatoes

    Peter Hitchens: Well, the
main point is that eating potatoes is itself wrong and that is why they should
be illegal. And one of the reasons we don’t address this is because of the
extreme selfishness of our society in which so many people imagine that their
    own pleasure trumps everything else.

    Julian
Assange said that he was sovereign over his own body. Well maybe he doesn’t
have anybody who cares about him. But if your family has to put up with you
after you’ve destroyed your mental health or in some other way deeply damaged
yourself by eating potatoes, then you and they will discover that you are not
an island and you have responsibilities to other people. And if there is no other
force apart from the law which will deter you from taking that semi-suicidal
step, then the law needs to be there…

    I
hear Sir Richard Branson talking about eating potatoes, and particularly of
that especially dangerous mashed potato, sordidly promoted as safe and soft, as
a freedom comparable apparently to the freedoms of thought, speech, and
assembly, which make this and others a free country.

    How
can that be? The purpose of potatoes is to befuddle us, to cloud our brains, to
make us passive. If we are discontented with the society in which we live,
surely it is utterly wrong and immoral to turn away from that, to spud
ourselves into passivity, to make ourselves perfect fodder for dictators,
despots, and propagandists, rather than to criticize, change, and reform the
society which we find repulsive. And I turn to these potato-heads and I mean to
be polite to them, and I say the politest thing that I say about them, is that
they are defeatists, dupes, and profoundly irresponsible. And I very much hope
that their message fails and fails and fails again.

???? Russell Brand came across as an arrogant know nothing who did nothing but damage the case for re-addressing the legislation ….if he had an argument in his tiny brain he would have used it instead of shouting ‘bigot’ three times in what may as well have been one sentence. I weep for humanity.

    • Smop

It was 100% true when he called that guy a bigot. I had to look up the word “bigot”: ”
a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one who exhibits intolerance or animosity toward members of a group.” I agree Russell went overboard shouting bigot three times, but at least it was TRUE, unlike anything the old white guys said.

For me it seems to describe the entire anti side of the debate. Their only argument was confusion and lies. They did not answer questions. They talked about ” Crack to Kids ” as if it were the same thing as legalization, and legalization as if it were the same thing as ending the war on drugs. They’re trying to keep drugs illegal to keep the money flowing, that’s all.

As long as Marihuana is illegal to Federal Government there will continue to be a war on those that use it. It sad to see how many people are signing their freedom away. Our votes are being trampled upon. In the name of health and safety.
