Study: Marijuana May Achieve Complete Remission Of Crohn’s Disease

crohns disease medical marijuanaUsing marijuana may cause a “complete remission” of Crohn’s disease, a new study suggests.

Published in the medical journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the study examined the effects of regular marijuana consumption on the development of the severely debilitating Crohn’s disease. Researchers at Israel’s Meir Medical Center found that five of the 11 patients (or nearly half) who smoked twice per day for eight weeks achieved complete remission, compared to none of the patients who were given a placebo. Additionally, another five of the test subjects receiving marijuana saw their symptoms cut in half. And, unlike many of the drugs currently prescribed to treat the illness, there were no significant side effects.

The symptoms of severe Crohn’s disease make it a living nightmare for many patients, who can suffer from bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and fevers.

This study is the first placebo-controlled clinical trial to measure the impact of marijuana consumption on Crohn’s disease. While there is no cure for Crohn’s, scientists are working to keep the symptoms in check and prevent further progression of the disease.

The researchers were hesitant to label the findings a total success, but said that they merit further research.

  1. I’m 24 years old and have had Crohn’s Disease for 8 years. Every pill I tried by doctors made no difference. I vaporize marijuana everyday for pain relief, anxiety, depression and to increase appitight. It’s so much safer then opioids which makes my symptoms worse and constipate me. Marijuana is much safer and healthier. Opioids only made me a junky. I’m addicted to pain pills and it’s ruining my life. People are so ignorant. Please post me some real facts that Marijuana is more harmful then alcohol, tobacco, pills…. Seriously people….really? Marijuana is controlling my flare ups and saving my life. The government doesn’t deserve out tax paying dollars on marijuana. The government doesn’t give a shit about our health. #1 reason why way deny us the use of canibus is do to the fact that billions have been invested in finding cures and treatments in a MAN MADE FORM WHICH MEANS CHEMICALS….. More pills. Look at all the pills addicts and then look at all the marijuana “addicts” it’s bullshit and doesn’t add up. The government wants to make a pill to make money for there financial loss trying to create a pill to cure diseases. Screw that. GODS PLANT.

  2. How severe were these patients?

Smoking is not good for Crohns, it badly affects the immune system. No herb, plant, natural remedy, not even the drugs will help or fix severe Crohns. And I’m talking when you are unable to walk due to the pain or you have lost control of your bowel that you have 5-6 accidents a day.

I had rectal Crohns for over 3 years this time and that was the most painful time ever. Nothing worked. I tried all sorts of remedies/natural therapies. When I was at my worst I went gluten, dairy, alcohol, sugar and caffeine free. I got worse. Even taking 2 hard core immunosuppressants couldn’t control this disease. I have been on the last drug option for 18 months now and I have just had my 3rd op to remove my colon/rectum because it wasn’t healing and the risk of cancer was increasing.

So until a study is performed on SEVERE Crohns patients like myself, these results are misleading and a fucking insult. Dope isn’t even a good pain relief for severe Crohns.

Sorry if this sounds angry but all these articles do is give false hope and reinforce the wrong perception of Crohns. Good on people that do recover from so called remedies like this, but I know plenty of fellow Crohnies that don’t and we all have ended up having major surgery.

    Thank you.

  3. MsGood Stuff on

Well damn here i go self medicating again. I was diagnosed with Chron’s dx back when i was 30 had multiple hospitalization with it and finally a life saving surgery in 97 when a colonostopy went horribly wrong and resulted in the rupture of my intenstens. Well sometime after that i found my self in a much more lucritive position and as MJ had always been my drug of choice (i very rarely drink and don’t smoke cigarettes) i was able to afford a regular supply. Now i find out that this is why i haven’t had any real flare up’s since 97. Well thank God for Marijuana God’s weed, i wouldn’t wish Chron’s DX on my worst enemy.

Any IBD is cured. I have ankylosing spondylitis and I dont have to worry anymore about IBD as the magic weed cured it.. for those not familiar with AS, it is a multi-problem immune deficiency disease in the rheumatism class..

  5. I will have to ask my nephew if his use has helped his Crohns. I am sure it does but I have never asked him how much it helps. Thanks, I now have a reason to call him and have a chat.
