What Are The Top Stoner Movies Of All Time?

There are few things that are as fun to me as consuming some marijuana and watching a good stoner movie. I don’t know if there is an official definition for what a stoner movie is, but you definitely know it when you see it. I don’t personally consider educational marijuana documentaries to be stoner movies, but a lot of my friends do, and I can live with that. Other people I know love movies that aren’t necessary entirely about marijuana, but are really fun to watch after consuming marijuana. I’m cool with calling those stoner movies too.

What is your definition of a stoner movie? Below are some of my favorite stoner movies. Please leave your comments of what your’s are. They don’t have to be in and particular order, or you can put them in order. I know that I haven’t seen every stoner movie out there, and want to watch new stuff, so I look forward to what people have to say. I will know doubt leave movies out of this article that should have been in it, so please, add them to the comments. I’d imagine other readers will be happy to see some titles that they haven’t seen before as well.

Half Baked (1998)

I love this movie. I will never forget when I got really high and watched Half Baked for the first time. It was at my friend Eric’s house, and I couldn’t understand how someone could capture the stoner experience in film form so well. Where can I get a giant sized Abba Zabba? Like Jaysmoker said, “The first time I watched this movie, I came out of the movie theater and actually felt higher then when I came in.”

Up in Smoke (1978)

Before I saw Half Baked, this was what I considered to be the best stoner movie of all time, and it very well still might be. I have never seen this movie and not laughed. An amazing classic. The hitchhiker scene at the beginning is legendary. ‘I even smoked that tied stick…You know, that stuff that is tied to a stick.’

Super High Me (2007)

Super High Me is an educational documentary, but it’s also very funny. Anytime a former ‘Stoner of the Year’/current comedian makes a film all about marijuana, I think it’s a recipe for success. It even has a cameo by Marc Emery. I would like to see a part 2 someday.

Pineapple Express (2008)

The cross joint and the term ‘lingerer” are a part of everyday vocabulary for stoners across the world thanks to this movie. When they had an April Fools Day joke that Pineapple Express 2 was coming out, it was the most bittersweet time in my stoner life. If I ever become rich, making a part 2 might have to happen.

Saving Grace (2000)

I don’t know how many people have seen this film, as it seems to have slipped under the radar for a lot of stoners. I didn’t see it when it came out; I saw it several years later. It really is funny though, and I like accents, so it’s a perfect storm for me.

Grandma’s Boy (2006)

If only a couple of events in my life had worked out differently, this movie would be the true life story of Johnny Green. Jaysmoker will attest to that. I love video games, I love marijuana, and great strain names. Grandma’s Boy has everything I love in a movie and life. Jaysmoker still calls his bong a ‘smoking lamp’ and it makes me laugh every time.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

‘You got a joint?…It would be a lot cooler if you did…’ As my roommate puts it, this is the quintessential stoner movie. I don’t know anyone, marijuana smoker or not, that doesn’t love this movie.

Easy Rider (1969)

One of Ninjasmokers favorites. I’m told that they smoked real weed in this movie, and I think that is super kick ass. I don’t watch it as often as I should, but a great film.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Although this movie is really about bowling, The Dude is revered by stoners throughout the world and probably even outer space. All weed smokers love this movie, yet I don’t know any bowlers that like this movie, isn’t that ironic??

Friday (1995)

The premise of this movie is there is a guy named Worm, who floated some weed to a guy named Smokey, who just so happens to introduce the chronic to Ice Cube. Add to it a killer soundtrack, and you have a recipe for stoner movie success. Such a quotable film.

Other stoner movies I love include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, How High, Super Troopers, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Stoned Age, Bio-Dome, Knocked Up, and PCU. What are your favorite stoner movies of all time???
