stop sopaSOPA And PIPA Could Take The Marijuana Movement Back To The Dark Ages

I don’t think it’s any secret that the internet has helped the marijuana movement. Using blogs, social media, news outlets, etc. the marijuana movement has grown significantly over the last decade. Take a minute and think about what the marijuana movement would be like without the use of the internet…Scary right?

Remember those days where we would have to stand long hours outside of malls and other high traffic areas in order to gather signatures. Remember when marijuana events were almost impossible to organize unless you had a long list of phone numbers? If SOPA and PIPA are approved by the United States Congress, the ramifications on the internet will be severe, and online marijuana efforts will be one of the first to get the chop. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a supporter of online piracy. However, I am a fan of common sense, and throwing the baby out with the bathwater is never a good idea, which is what would happen if SOPA and PIPA were passed.

Have you been using Twitter and Facebook to organize your rallies and protests? If SOPA and PIPA are passed, it’s almost guaranteed that you wouldn’t be able to use social media like you have been. Do you own a blog, or follow blogs to get your marijuana news and information? If SOPA and PIPA are passed, you will be forced to go back to newspapers and TV media, which let’s face it, newspapers and TV media are not marijuana friendly, which is why online marijuana efforts started in the first place! Don’t just take it from me, below are some things that I found on the net that others are saying:

Google – Fighting online piracy is important. The most effective way to shut down pirate websites is through targeted legislation that cuts off their funding. There’s no need to make American social networks, blogs and search engines censor the Internet or undermine the existing laws that have enabled the Web to thrive, creating millions of U.S. jobs…Too much is at stake — please vote NO on PIPA and SOPA.

Wikipedia – For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia. Learn more.

ACLU – We opposed SOPA in its original form mostly because the impact on non-infringing content would violate the First Amendment right to free speech of the owners and authors of that content, as well as the rights of Internet users to access that content. In fact, we were asked to present our views at a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee scheduled for today and submitted our testimony in preparation for that hearing. But the hearing was postponed after SOPA’s proponents promised to significantly change the bill and after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor proposed not to bring any bill to the floor for a vote unless it represented a true consensus of those who support and those who oppose SOPA.

As you can see, this is as serious as serious gets. If you like using the internet to gain marijuana information, or to spread awareness, or you just don’t like the federal government overstepping it’s reach, then FIGHT SOPA AND PIPA! The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel.

  1. Yes – It’s a sad ploy to control us via “government only” sponsored propaganda.
The only threat to our national security is the lawmakers we currently have in place.
How many of you that voted for him are happy with “King Obama” now?
Wake Up America! Before it’s too late!

It is sad that we have “free speech”, But whenever something is said that takes off like wildfire. The government does everything in its power to stop the message from getting out if they do not like what is said.

  3. What is truly amazing about this, is that the whole P2P process, the hard and soft ware, the concept itself in fact, was created, promoted and distributed by the very corporations who have had SOPA and PIPA created. Warner Bros, Microsoft, Disney and all the others involved with promoting this heinous legislation… they are the people who created the original p2p software and distributed it free to America and the world from their own and associated websites for a decade. According to the law, they are 100% culpable for any crimes committed by anyone who has ever used any of the p2p software or websites to download copyrighted material, because they promoted it precisely for the purpose of downloading copyrighted material. In exactly the same way that the Fed created the Drug Problem by adding false drug charges to every arrest, in order to create the War on Drugs, (which is really just a war on Cannabis), the criminal-owned entertainment industry corporations have created the Piracy Problem specifically to convince lawmakers to pass this fascist-friendly legislation in order to allow them to take over the web. I’m truly amazed that so few people realize this simple fact. Its no wonder the fascists are having no problem at all turning America into Neo Naziland overnight.
God save America… aint gonna happen people. You have to get wise and fast if you want to save even a small fraction of what America was supposed to be. Every actor, every painter, every musician should start proceedings immediately, to sue the companies currently promoting SOPA and PIPA because piracy is 100% their crime.

  4. Gary Mont brings a very good fact to light which a lot of people are unaware of, basically the companies who are supporting these extremely radical laws are responsible for distributing the software in the first place! (The p2p software such as Ares, Limewire, etc. which allows everyday American users to download copyright material)

I remember watching a YouTube video about a month ago with an older gentlemen wearing a hat explaining this ENTIRE ‘conspiracy’ in depth.

The video’s name started with, “STOP SOPA NOW!” If anyone is interested, I would post the link but I’m on my mobile :(

    save the internetz!

  5. Thank you tommy B.

I believe the video you’re referring to is this one.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc

It is indeed an excellent expose of the scam and as a bonus, contains copies of many of the pages that the entertainment industry used to promote and distribute the idea of and software for downloading copyright material. A definite smoking gun.

It is now painfully apparent that many users are simply too young to have visited these websites and this video is both entertaining and informative for old and young alike. It also speaks about the idea of artists and writers, programmers and musicians suing the entertainment industry for their part in the creation of the so-called Piracy Problem.

I suggest everyone view this video before it is removed by the powers that wanna be.
